over the river and through the... crafts...

(Through the crafts? What the hell? That song has been stuck in my head all day for no discernable reason. I would like to discern one now, please, and make it go away.)

Anyway, crafts, yes. I discovered Craftster this week, and I am so completely hooked. I want to make everything, EVERYTHING, on that site, including embroidered pillowcases. I have two embroidered pillowcases that my parents got as a wedding gift that I adore. I mean, look at this. How creative and arty is that, and how much fun would it be to make it? Despite the fact that I never like fussy projects, and a project involving tiny needles making tiny stitches in tiny patterns is probably fussier than anything I've ever tried?

The new Craftster fixation actually dovetails nicely with my existing Etsy fixation -- I can admire the stuff of alread-crafty people and then daydream about my own crafty things, like making sketchbooks out of recycled paper and a Luna Lovegood iron-on transfer. And I think it is only a matter of time until I give in and admit that I really want to learn to sew. And some mysterious day in the future, endless supplies of time and money will fall like manna from the heavens, and I will indulge all this stuff.

Next time you're in New York, we should go to the Etsy Craft Center...it's only a 20 minute walk from my apartment. I went to their Halloween party this year...best costumes I've ever seen. So many of my friends here are total craftsters -- knitters, collagers, you name it. Rose even had her own yarn store (Yarnivore) for a few years. Have you heard of Church of Craft?

such fun stuff! I love how they inspire each other - the luna lovegood shirt got someone else excited about making shrinky dink radish earrings! As a very selfish and guarded person, I am agog at the unrestrained sharing! so great.

I know, I love the spirit of this stuff... just people inspiring each other. Brings a tear to the eye.

And sadly, I haven't heard of Church of Craft or Yarnivore, although I love them both! We are craft-bound next time I'm in Brooklyn.
