It is totally silent in my office right now. Totally. Silent. My office. Actually a newsroom, which is usually full of ringing phones and chattering police scanners and people interviewing and typing and yelling and laughing. It's really sort of lovely, if I can forget about the the reason it's silent -- which is that I'm here after everyone else has gone, waiting for the editor to make that magical phone call and tell me my pages are done. Now it's just me and the steady, calming hum of a billion computers and their various other electronic friends. Buildings are kind of sad when they're empty, but they're kind of dignified, somehow... phone! Saved by the ring before the melodramatic tangent gets any further.
