Has anyone noticed that Salon is getting really good again? I was convinced it was going under once they started the subscription service, which I reluctantly split with several other people mainly because I couldn't bear the thought of never being able to read another Survivor update again. For a while, I'd scroll down the list of new stories and not see one single headling that really caught my eye. But now, somewhat suddenly, it's back to its old self. The coverage of The War, Etc. -- a lot of it told in a first-person perspective by a reporter stationed there -- is excellent (when used as a supplement to and not a substitute for straighter news reporting, in my opinion). The features are really solid. The opinion pieces are really really solid. The books section (which I hope to freelance for someday so as to contribute my brilliant insights) highlights a lot of off-the-beaten-track stuff. The Brilliant Careers series is wonderful and insanely thorough, and I read articles about people I've should have heard of but haven't. I never thought I'd catch myself saying this, but once a week or so I go through Amy Reiter's gossip column, which is funny and trivial and perfect. I even listen to the audio downloads sometimes.

Was there a point, here? Oh yeah. A feature on the pathetic state of women's magazines. I just added an excerpt to that long-neglected list of quotes on the bottom right, too.
