freezy

I just saw "2009" in my iPhoto upload thingie and thought it was a typo. Can it really be 2009? But I guess it is: My wonderful visiting friends have gone home, this two-week break that I so needed will be over tomorrow, the wheel of work and school and daily obligation is slowly grinding into action again.

This morning, I finished (and totally loved) Anne Lamott's Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith. The word "faith" never sits that well with me; I am not a very faith-full person, in a lot of ways. I described myself as an "agnostic Jew" on my online dating profile once upon a time, and that's pretty much right in terms of the whole God thing. Most of the time, I also don't have much faith in my fellow humans, in our government or anyone else's, in myself, in the idea of "meant to be." H. recently sent me this amazing sermon and I've been thinking about radical self-acceptance ever since -- could I ever have enough faith to do that?

I'm totally mimicking Anne Lamott's writing style right now and completely annoying myself. So I will just quote randomly from her and slap down a few photos from a New Year's Day mini-hike to the frozen waterfall near my house. May your year be full of amazing icicles and nice friends and everything you want and deserve. Bring it, 2009.
"During the Cuban Missile Crisis, President Kennedy received two letters from the Kremlin. One was aggressive, the other gentler. And because Kennedy said to his men, 'Let's respond to the saner message,' we didn't get blown up, or have to blow up to the world. So I tried to respond to the kinder voice." (66)

"I love my life more, and me more.... And as that old saying goes, it's not that I think less of myself, but that I think of myself less often. And that feels like heaven to me." (176)

"My mind is my main problem almost all the time. I wish I could leave it in the fridge when I go out, but it likes to come with me. I have tried to get it to take up a nice hobby, like macrame, but it prefers to think about things, and jot down what annoys it." (259)

Great photos! I love the waterfall picture. And I'm glad you saw "Sandwiches That You Will Like"! Did you, um, like it?
