the deluxe, autographed edition of gardening with dummies

A fun riddle: It's 91 degrees and humid right now (which I've been assured never happens in Ithaca! really! totally unheard of!) and I'm in our un-air-conditioned second-floor apartment. What's one of the only things I could possibly do to make myself MORE hot?

Answer: Get a serious sunburn from staying in the garden for five and a half hours on a that very same sunny 91-degree day!

God, I am stupid. Although I am at least a stupid person with a garden that contains 16 tomato plants, 10 pepper plants, a whole lot more herbs and a couple other things still to be put in the ground. I should have planted some aloe...

More details and more pictures soon -- to all the people who gave me advice, in the last post, thanks! I am now reasonably sure that the cilantro is indeed coming up and is indeed cilantro, even without further taste testing. And yeah, the ground is really dry. I took that picture before I watered that day, though, and the plants have still been pretty perky. I also gave everything a very thorough soak with a borrowed hose today.

Did you say 16 tomato plants? And you're aware of how many tomatoes come off of each tomato plant?

I see gifts of salsa and marinara in all of our futures... :)

Do you need an air conditioner? I think I have one I could sell you cheap. We were going to sell it at a yard sale, but let me know if you want it. I could bring it up next weekend.

Well, I know how many tomatoes are SUPPOSED to come off each tomato plant, I just have no confidence that I will actually get that many. And I couldn't face the idea that I might only have a couple lousy tomatoes, when tomatoes are what I'm most excited about. And there's so much space in the garden -- it's still only a little over half full -- that it seems crazy to let it stay dormant when I could be growing stuff.

But the answer to your question is yes, I know it's crazy. Get ready for gifts... salsa and marinara are very good ideas... :)

And we actually bought an air conditioner tonight. I am in love with it. I kind of want to make out with it right now, in fact, as it bathes me in its heavenly coolness. But maybe we could go for one in another room, too -- let me get back to you on that. Thanks!

You are a rock star! A rock star! So envious of the life in Ithaca...

LOL. I think you are going to be overwhelmed with all the tomatoes you get. Our first year at the house.... I think I planted 6 or 8 tomato plants, and we couldn't keep up with it. I had to give tons to our neighbor, who made and jarred salsa for us (and for themselves as well). We ended up throwing a bunch away, too, because we couldn't eat them all before they went bad. This year I only planted 4 tomato plants (4 different kinds of tomatoes). I planted cherry toms for the first time this year. I'm excited about those.

Yes, let me know about the a/c. I can bring it up next weekend.

You might be overwhelmed with all the peppers, too...that's a lot of pepper plants! You'll have to look into how to roast them and store them in olive oil.

Sixteen tomato plants makes you a gardening rock star, in my book. I've only got 3 this year, and I'm seriously jealous. Next year I'm planning to plant about half that many. :)

Marinara will take use a lot of tomatoes, by the way. That would be a good way to use up some of the excess.

Hope your sunburn is feeling better today!

OMG. yum.

Maybe it's a good thing you planted so many tomatoes...you can sell them to people since there's some crazy outbreak of salmonella on tomatoes and lots of stores and restaurants aren't going to have any.

omg. No air conditioning? you are mad. Thank goodness you got an AC unit!

I know! It really has saved our lives the last few nights... I kind of wanted to be a bad-ass and go without, since supposedly it's only really hot here for a week or two every summer (I am not sold on this yet, since I've been here for one week and four of the days have already been sweltering) but after one night of no sleep, we gave up...

I didn't know about the salmonella! Maybe I will sell tomatoes (organic! local! everything popular right now!) as a side business and pay for grad school that way. Ha.

And mm, I hope there is much marinara and roasted peppers in my future. YUM.
