22: head of the class

In a moment of really weird judgement, I volunteered to teach a workshop at a public library near Syracuse. It's part of the library's "Tech Tuesday" series and it's about Twitter, which is near and dear to my heart. I went to another TT workshop tonight, and I think I can do this, but... help? Any teacher tips would be greatly appreciated. I have experience speaking in front of groups and feel fairly comfortable with it, but I've never tried to TEACH anyone anything in a formal setting except how to knit, which is a little different.

Sounds like something where you will need to have a projector available so you can demonstrate and show people exactly what you're talking about. Will the library provide a computer and projector for you?

Yup, it will. I can basically have the same set-up as the one I saw last night: networked computer, projector, very big screen, digital camera if I need it. What I can't have is a whole computer lab where each person has a computer -- which, of course, is the way I designed the original lesson plan.

I've been teaching a computer literacy class for a few weeks now, and I can tell you that your students will no know as much about computers as you assume they do. Except for that one woman. She will basically have invented Twitter and will spend the entire class rolling her eyes and checking her email.

However, you can't worry about that bitch.

Take the same approach as you would to writing a set of instructions for a person from another planet. It will be a tad slow for some students, but perfect for many others. Be sure to include some cool tips and tricks (I don't use Twitter so I can't help here), and when in doubt resort to humor.

Also: this series of videos is great for anyone who needs to lecture on anything: http://isites.harvard.edu/fs/html/icb.topic58703/winston1.html

Fcuk, there's a dot-html at the end of that url. The comment engine won't let me post it.
