Katherine Graham's funeral on CNN right now -- Yo-Yo Ma's cello echoing throughout the cathedral, the eyes of 4,000 of her friends and colleagues turned toward him while ceilings seem ready to fly away. Amazing, even on TV. (H. and I actually went to a service there last Sunday, so the image is somewhat more concrete to me because of that.) Anyway, her daughter just spoke and said, "My mother would have loved this funeral"... which really does sort of make you think, wouldn't it be nice if there was room in whatever religion's tradition for a pre-death funeral, so that everyone could do the same kind of wistful celebrating of a person's life when he or she was still around to hear it. You know?
